Carthage settled an old score against La Vega Friday night beating the Pirates 46 to 39.  La Vega had topped the Bulldogs 39-3 two years ago and ended up winning the state title.

Carthage recovered an onside kick for another shot at starting an offensive drive on the La Vega side of the 50.

Now it was La Vega’s turn to force a turnover as the Pirates recovered a fumble by the Bulldogs. La Vega got on the board seven plays later off a 45-yard run.

Overall, La Vega outgained Carthage, 463-266. The Pirates had more rushing yards alone (317). But it was the 21-0 start by the Bulldogs that sealed the state championship game berth for Carthage.

Carthage (15-0) is set to face Kennedale, a 54-28 winner over Stephenville in its semifinal match, Friday at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium in an 11 a.m. kickoff.

This marks Carthage’s seventh trip to the state finals in school history and its sixth in Scott Surratt’s 11-year tenure.
